Trade rumors surrounding Boston Bruins goalie Linus Ullmark are at an all-time high. According to Bruce Garrioch, trade talks between the Bruins and Ottawa Senators have intensified. David Pagnotta also recently wrote that two sources informed him that Ullmark would accept a trade to Ottawa if a deal was finalized.
However, while Ottawa’s interest in Ullmark is high, other clubs, including the Detroit Red Wings, are still in the goalie market. With Ullmark being the last big fish on the trade market, it would not be too shocking if the Red Wings stepped up their efforts to acquire him.
In his pre-draft availability, Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman recently confirmed that the Original Six club is in the goalie market. Yet, he also specified that he does not want a goalie to be with the Red Wings for only two or three years. Ullmark is entering the final season of his deal, which creates an obstacle.
While on 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, Elliotte Friedman shared his opinion on Yzerman wanting the Red Wings to add a goalie for the long term:
“This Yzerman quote, if he’s interested in Ullmark, that says to me he wants Ullmark with an extension.”
Ullmark would undoubtedly be a massive addition to the Red Wings’ roster if acquired and extended. Ville Husso has not been the answer between the pipes for Detroit, as he has had under a .900 SV% in each of his two seasons since joining them. Meanwhile, Alex Lyon was solid in his first year in Detroit, but the backup role is probably a better fit for him.
It will be intriguing to see if the Red Wings make a more significant push to land Ullmark from here. If Ullmark expressed in signing an extension with Detroit, there could be a match here. He would give them the starter they need.
