Rotherham United striker was a wanted man late in the last transfer window

Rotherham United boss Steve Evans has said Sam Nombe attracted interest late in the last transfer window.

Rotherham United kept hold of the attacker beyond the deadline though and decided not to let him leave.

Nombe, 25, is under contract with the League One side until 2027 and has been with them since last year.

Evans has said, as per a report by the Rotherham Advertiser:

“In the last week of the window, three or four phone calls came in to me or Rob (director of football recruitment Scott) and just didn’t get any joy back from us. We wanted to keep him.

“We’ve got the boy a lot fitter, a lot sharper. We’ve got him a lot more focused. I think he’s got a lot more belief in himself, which comes from the coaching staff and myself.

“He has been a different player. He’s been a player who everyone suddenly wants to applaud. Everyone gets off their seats when he makes that run, when he gets the ball. We’re delighted he’s here.”

He added: “It didn’t go as far as written offers because people were ascertaining whether we’d be prepared to do something. The straight answer was ‘no’.”

Retaining the services of Nombe was a shrewd move by Rotherham United, as he gives them more competition and depth up front.

He scored only three goals in the last campaign as they were relegated from the Championship along with Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City. However, he has proven himself in the third tier in the past.

The attacker rose up through the academy at MK Dons and went on to score six times in 46 outings for the Buckinghamshire outfit as a youngster, as well as having loan spells away at Oxford City, Maidenhead United, and Luton Town to get some experience.

Nombe was snapped up by Exeter City in 2021 and was a hit during his time with the Grecians, finding the net on 27 occasions in 85 outings.

That form earned him a switch to Rotherham United, and although it hasn’t quite worked out for him in South Yorkshire yet, he still has time.

What next for Rotherham United?

The Millers drew 1-1 away at Charlton Athletic over the weekend, with Liam Kelly on the scoresheet for them at The Valley.

They are back in action this weekend with a home clash against Burton Albion as they look to build some momentum. Promotion is their aim this term under former Leeds United and Stevenage manager Evans.
