Update: Regis Le Bris makes transfer claim on Wilson Isidor

Regis Le Bris has revealed that Wilson Isidor snubbed more lucrative offers in order to seal a summer loan switch to Sunderland, where he is swiftly proving a huge hit.

Under the tuition of Le Bris, Sunderland have swept the championship aside through a stunning start to the season, which has them at the top of the league table after ten matches, seven of those having ended in victory.

A potential title charge would have doubtless appeared wishful thinking prior to the season’s commencement, although Sunderland have pronounced their status as the team to beat.

EFL Championship standings, as of October 21
Position Team P GD Pts
1st Sunderland 10 +11 22
2nd Burnley 10 +12 21
3rd Leeds United 10 +10 19
4th Sheffield United 10 +7 19
5th West Bromwich Albion 10 +6 18
6th Blackburn Rovers 10 +5 18

After playing out an action-packed 2-2 draw at home to promotion rivals Leeds United before the two-week international break, Sunderland returned to winning ways by seeing off Hull City in a slender 1-0 victory at the MKM Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Isidor ensured all three points just after the hour mark with a breathtaking solo effort, which saw him drive forward at blistering speed from inside his own half before chipping a cool finish over the head of Hull’s Ivor Pandur.

It marked the third goal in the last four games for Isidor, who is now becoming an instrumental presence for Sunderland after joining on loan from Zenit St Petersburg in August.

Isidor reportedly received offers from clubs in the Championship and a number of other leagues on the continent, although he ultimately decided to reunite with Le Bris, whom he worked with as a youth player at Rennes.

Their relationship was a driving force behind Isidor’s decision to join Sunderland, with Le Bris revealing that the versatile French forward declined attractive offers elsewhere to complete the move.

“There is always competition for good players. Maybe we had an advantage because I knew him before,” Le Bris explained to the Northern Echo.

“I was connected with his story and his environment. It’s still a question of confidence with a player, with a coach and with a club as well.

“Sunderland is a big club and, for him, it is a new step in his career. He wanted to go back into Europe, and Sunderland is very important for him, I think.

“The link between us maybe made the difference. It’s not always a question of money; it is a question of creating the right environment to learn.

“I think Wilson is like that. He wants to learn and improve and give his best for the team. He felt that feeling during our conversations.”

Sunderland and Regis Le Bris have struck gold with Wilson Isidor

The deal to bring Isidor to Wearside is already appearing to be an inspired one, as he has led the line with great aplomb as of late.

Sunderland had lacked a genuinely prolific marksman for far too long, and the shortage of goals from forward areas was a big part of last season’s disappointment. However, it does feel as though they may have just unearthed their long-awaited answer now, and Isidor could be a crucial influence beyond this season.

The Black Cats have the option to make Isidor’s stay a permanent one come the end of the season, and they will surely act upon that if his current form continues deep into the season.

With frightening speed, positive link-up play, positional flexibility and, of course, a clear eye for goal, Sunderland can surely consider themselves rather fortunate to have Isidor in their ranks.
